On March 31st, the Mason City Assessor's Office mailed assessment notices to any property that has had a change in assessed value for the 2020 Assessment year. This year, due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, the Assessor's Office is currently closed to the public, however you may still contact us with questions regarding your assessment via the following options:

  • Phone: 641-421-3061
  • Email:
  • Fax: 641-421-3091
  • Mail: Mason City Assessor’s Office
             220 N Washington Ave
             Mason City, IA 50401

Property owners have the right to appeal their value each year. There are two options to appeal your value:

  • Between April 2 - 25 property owners can file an informal appeal. This involves discussing your value concerns with the Assessor’s Office staff and providing any additional information that may not have been considered in the valuation of your property. No on-site inspections will be conducted this year due the COVID-19 virus. If an agreement can be reached on a new value prior to the end of the business day on April 25, you may sign a settlement agreement with the assessor to make that change. If you wish to file an informal appeal, please contact us using one of the options listed above. Please note, in order to complete the informal appeal by the state-mandated deadline, we request you contact us as early as possible for this option.
  • This year due to the disaster declaration covering the entire state of Iowa, Governor Reynolds has issued an order granting extensions to both the Board of Review session and Board of Review petition deadlines. Between April 2nd - June 5th property owners can file a written petition to the Board of Review. Forms may be submitted via mail, email, or fax using the above contact information. If you are unable to access the form via our website, you may also contact us and request a form be sent to you by mail, email, or fax. Forms must be received by our office or postmarked June 5th to be considered by the Board of Review. If you have questions about filing a petition with the Board of Review, please review this Board of Review Guidelines document, then contact our office with additional questions.

The Board of Review will begin their session May 1st and must conclude by June 15th. These hearings are required to be open meetings. Due to the need for limited contact, electronic meetings, such as by telephone, may be held when a meeting in person is impossible or impractical. If the City Assessor's Office is closed to the public in May due to COVID-19, hearings with the Board of Review will only be conducted by telephone.

If you have any questions about this information, please contact our office.
